THE ECONOMY OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS
You cannot serve God without the gift. There's what we call the economy of gifts. The moment you give your life to Christ, God comes to you and bequeaths to you gifts, because in engaging in service to the Lord, you would need to take advantage of utensils that you never earn for you to carry out the kind of service that God can accept.
You cannot serve God without a gift. There’s what we call the economy of gifts. The moment you give your life to Christ, God comes to you and bequeaths to you gifts. Because in engaging in service to the Lord, you would need to take advantage of utensils that you never earn for you to carry out the kind of service that God can accept.
So there’s a wide spectrum of gifts that God makes available. We are looking at one of the categories in the course of this teaching, which is spiritual gifts — gifts that come from the Holy Ghost. It says there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. Can you see that spiritual gifts are under the authority of the Holy Spirit?
The Bible says there are differences OF administrations. Another translation calls it ministries or services. When God calls a man, He’s calling him into service, because in the kingdom of God, greatness comes through service. God allows every believer to serve Him.
It will interest you to know that the vision God had concerning Israel in Exodus 19:6 was to raise a kingdom of priests. Just as other nations are known for philosophy, engineering, technology, or politics, God wanted a nation of priests — people in service to Him. Unfortunately, that vision did not come fully to pass, because only a tribe of priests emerged in Israel.
So when God set up the Church, He gave us a vision that we are a royal priesthood. He is fulfilling what He could not fulfill with Israel by giving each of us an opportunity to serve Him. Service in the kingdom is greatness. You want to be great in heaven? They will check your service record. Influence is a currency that God gives a servant that makes him great in the eyes of men. God will not give you money but will give you influence, and that influence will bring provision if you need it.
When I resigned from my job in the oil industry, I went to God and asked, “Now that I’ve resigned, how will I feed my family?” He told me, “Teach the Bible.” I stayed with Him for two weeks, and He said, “Teach the Bible.” He always gives a prescription of service because that’s how His kingdom works.
The average believer doesn’t understand that his greatness is tied to his willingness to serve God. So I became more focused, changed my library, began new studies, and started teaching. As I continued in that assignment, God gave me influence. I started teaching in my living room, and from there, RCN began. Later, God said, “You have been faithful. I will add power to this work and take My presence and power to the nations.” That was where my international ministry was approved in heaven.
So greatness is service, and the currency to sustain that greatness is faithfulness. The Holy Spirit governs the gifts, Jesus governs service, and God the Father governs operations. Gifts are from the Holy Spirit, services are given by Jesus, and operations are directed by the Father.
These gifts are from the Holy Ghost, operated by the Holy Ghost, and function only when the Holy Ghost wills. You cannot decide to heal people on your own. When the Holy Spirit wants to heal, you will know. These gifts belong to Him; they are not yours. The one gift the Holy Spirit gives that you can use at will is speaking in tongues. Every other gift operates as the Spirit wills.
The gifts of the Spirit fall into categories:
-
Power gifts: gifts of healing, gift of faith, and working of miracles.
-
Revelation gifts: word of knowledge, word of wisdom, and discerning of spirits.
-
Vocal gifts: prophecy, diverse kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues.
Every believer should be equipped to prophesy. The Bible says that all may prophesy. So every believer has at least the simple gift of prophecy.
In Revelation 19:10, the Bible says, “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” This means the life of prophecy is that Jesus speaks through the Holy Spirit using human vessels. Jesus still wants to speak through His body and act through His body.
In 2 Peter 1:21, we learn that “holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” The person becomes a mouthpiece for God, carried by the Spirit.
Prophecy can operate in two ways — by revelation and by inspiration.
-
Prophecy by revelation happens when God shows you something privately, and later you deliver it.
-
Prophecy by inspiration happens when you receive and speak the message at the same time.
Prophecies by inspiration are often more powerful and immediate than those by revelation.
Finally, there is the simple gift of prophecy, which every believer can operate in, and the advanced operation of prophecy, which comes with greater spiritual authority and depth.
